pr0files are Los Angeles transplant dream electro-pop duo Lauren Pardini and Danny Sternbaum. Long time friends and collaborators, the pair under the moniker pr0files have been a project just shy of three years. They create signature 80’s-tinged dark synth pop songs with cinematic sensibilities that allow you to get lost in a nostalgic, dream-like world. We are not the first to mention that their music could seamlessly belong in the Drive soundtrack, yet it is inevitable. Their debut album, Jurassic Technologie dropped at the end of February and we helped celebrate the highly anticipated release at their sold out show with Nylo and RKCB at the Lyric Theater, by capturing their performance in a special edition LYKA visualette.

Jurassic Technologie was heavily inspired by the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City, which the band describes as “a room on acid.” The museum, founded by David and Diana Wilson in 1988, is a place that “captures a time when science mingled with poetry in its pursuit of answers to life’s mysterious questions.” The overall impression the museum imparts on its guests had significant meaning for both Danny and Lauren, and the adapted title stuck before they even began writing the album. For Lauren, the museum was the venue for a date night that officially declared her and her prospective boyfriend at the time, a couple. For Danny, it was a place he shared with a good friend of his that ended up passing about two years ago. But the memories, atmosphere and overall vibe the museum holds stuck with the band, and is conveyed in the songs that make up their album.

“That place ended up becoming a pretty special place for us and I think that was in the back of our minds when we wrote this album. Just kind of the feeling you get when you’re there.” - Danny
 

“It’s an emotion. When you walk in there, whether you like it or not, there is an emotion. A weird heaviness that overcomes you, and there are no windows, it’s very heavy.” - Lauren

The band initially generated a buzz with the release of their song “Call Yourself A Lover,” a hypnotic, melancholy love song that builds and endures luscious synths combined with Lauren’s dreamy vocals. The unforeseen positive response from the digital world was a defining moment for the duo to commit to the project, and they began to release single by single, gem after gem, each song that made up the full length. The rooted substance in the band’s lyrical content and pristine production is an indication of their originality, and is what sets them apart from the average synth pop group and generic LA music scene. The album is an amalgamation of various 80s influenced, from bouncy dance track ‘Get It Up,’ to dark disco banger ‘Like A Knife,’ to downtempo instrumental track laced with Kavinsky-esque vocal undertones ‘Missing You Tonight.’

“The ocean and Los Angeles across the board. The ocean, the color of the sky at night, the freeway… I know that’s so cliche and everyone always talks about Drive when they talk about us, but I’m always in my car when I listen to our songs. And it’s usually on the way home from the studio at 1am on the 10 [freeway], and our studio is downtown, so I’m driving through all the skylines. I always picture that in my head when I listen to our stuff.” - Lauren

What has been your proudest moment as a project so far, and what is your definition of success?
L: After we put out ‘Call Yourself A Lover, we had some setbacks because when you’re a new band, everybody kind of jumps on board, but we got held up and didn’t put anything new out. I think a lot of people were really like, ‘oh yea, they’re done.’ But eventually we were able to climb back onto the Internet when we put out ‘Forgive,’ which was a year later. It was really hard, and I can’t explain how painful it was leading up to it.
D: Yeah, for a brand new band we were working with people that weren’t right for us. A lot of bands don’t get themselves out of that situation in time, and we fortunately were able to do it. Even at that point, a lot of people would not be able to get that momentum back or recover emotionally from that. And we forced ourselves to and it turned out pretty good.
L: Yeah, because the thing about the Internet is that people like new things, so when you’re not new, it’s much harder to get people’s attention. Especially if they haven’t heard from you in a year.

What are you guys listening to currently?
D: The new Breakbot album. That’s what I’ve been listening to for the past week.
L: I have actually been listening to a lot of classical music. Sometimes when my ears are tired, I want to hear orchestras and and music that’s 300 years old. Because it’s Oscars season, I’ve been listening to a lot of soundtracks. What was that movie called, Sicario? That soundtrack is ridiculous. It sounds like 80’s Kavinsky or something, it’s so cool.

What are you favorite brunch spots?
D: Yes, Sage is one of my favorite restaurants. Gracias Madre.

Are you vegan?
D: Mostly vegan, I eat fish also and once in awhile I’ll have dairy. But yes, for the most part.
L: When I lived in Venice, I really liked Superba.

Bloody marys or mimosas?
D: Mm, mimosas.
L: Bloody marys.
D: Why, do you have some? Haha
